Meghalaya

Land of Clouds & Living Roots

Overview

Meghalaya receives more rainfall than almost anywhere on earth, and it shows. The land is impossibly green. Waterfalls pour off every ridge. Rivers run clear as glass. And in the forests of the Khasi Hills, ancient trees have been trained over centuries to form living root bridges — the only infrastructure in the world that grows stronger with age.

Most people arrive in Shillong expecting a hill station. What they find is a city with a pulse unlike anything else in India — rock music venues next to Presbyterian churches, local markets selling turmeric and strange forest fruits, rain-slicked streets that feel quietly cinematic.

The real Meghalaya begins when you leave Shillong. The road to Cherrapunji drops through mist and forest to a place where clouds form below you. The living root bridges require a descent into the gorge — steep, slippery, magnificent — and an ascent back out that earns the view.

We time these journeys for October and November, when the monsoon has lifted but the land is still saturated with green. You get the beauty without the downpour.

What You'll Do

Experiences

01

The Root Bridge Descent

The trek to Nongriat is 3,000 steps down into a gorge. At the bottom: a double-decker living bridge woven from rubber tree roots over 500 years. You cross it. Water runs beneath you. The roots are alive under your feet. Coming back up, you understand why.

02

Dawki by Boat

The Umngot river at Dawki is so clear you can see the river bed 10 feet down. A local fisherman rows you across in a wooden boat that seems to float on glass. The Bangladesh hills are visible on the far bank. Time stops.

03

Mawlynnong Village

Asia's cleanest village has bamboo dustbins on every corner and flower boxes on every house. The Khasi women who maintain it will show you the sky view platform built from bamboo — a structure that sways pleasantly in the breeze and offers the whole valley.

04

Shillong After Dark

Shillong has a live music culture that traces back to the 1970s. Local bands play rock, blues, and folk in venues that feel like converted garages. Order local rice beer and stay until the last song.

05

Cave Walk at Krem Mawmluh

One of Meghalaya's ancient caves, recently designated a UNESCO geological site. A local guide takes you through limestone formations and underground streams with a headlamp and a story about why the Khasi believe mountains are sacred.

06

Nohkalikai at Dawn

India's highest plunge waterfall drops 340 metres off a cliff edge into a green pool below. See it at first light before the mist burns off. The spray reaches you from 100 metres away. Nothing prepares you for the scale.

Traveler Stories

From people who've traveled Meghalaya with us

The root bridge trek was the hardest and most beautiful thing I've done. My legs hurt for two days. Worth every step.

Dawki stopped me completely. I just sat in the boat for twenty minutes not saying anything. The water is unreal.
