If you want to slow down or add North Sikkim, consider a longer itinerary.
What is the best time to visit Darjeeling and Sikkim?
October to mid-December and March to May are the best months for a combined Darjeeling Sikkim trip. Post-monsoon offers crystal-clear Kanchenjunga views from Tiger Hill and reliable access to Tsomgo Lake. Spring is warm, the tea gardens are flushing their first flush, and rhododendrons are in bloom. Avoid July and August when both hill regions experience heavy rainfall and frequent road closures.
Do I need permits for Darjeeling and Sikkim?
Indian nationals do not need an Inner Line Permit for Gangtok or Darjeeling. For Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass in Sikkim, a Protected Area Permit is required — your operator arranges this, and you need a valid government photo ID. Nathula Pass is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. No separate permit is needed for standard Darjeeling sightseeing including Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, and Ghoom Monastery.
