About This Journey

Journey Overview

Step off the flight at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or the train at NJP Railway Station, and within two hours the city dissolves entirely — replaced by the low green canopy and river-mist of the Dooars, India's most underrated wildlife corridor. This Dooars wildlife safari package runs 3 nights and 4 days, threading through the full width of the terai: from a nature lodge on the edge of Gorumara National Park in Lataguri, east through the ancient elephant corridor of Chilapata Forest, and into the vast grassland savannahs of Jaldapara National Park. On Day 2 you enter Gorumara at pre-dawn, when one-horned rhinos move through the tall grass and gaur drift between the sal trees. The Chukchuki watchtower offers some of West Bengal's finest birding, with Indian hornbills and scarlet minivets regular sightings. Day 3 carries you deeper through Chilapata's ruins before settling beside Jaldapara. The journey closes with a Jaldapara elephant safari at first light on Day 4: riding into the grasslands at dawn is a deeply unhurried experience, and one-horned rhinos rarely disappoint. Prices start from ₹13,500 per person for a group of six.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Dooars for a wildlife safari?

October through mid-June is the ideal window for a Dooars wildlife safari. The forests come alive during the cool dry months of November to February, when undergrowth thins out and animals gather near water sources, making sightings more reliable. March to May is excellent for elephant activity before the heat builds. The Dooars forests close from approximately mid-June to mid-September during the monsoon, and this package is not available during that period.

Which animals can you see in Gorumara and Jaldapara?

Both parks host the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, which is the star sighting of the Dooars. Gorumara National Park is also known for Asian elephants, gaur (Indian bison), spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, and leopards. Jaldapara has the densest rhino population in West Bengal. Bird life is exceptional throughout — Indian hornbills, paradise flycatchers, woodpeckers, and numerous migratory species are regularly spotted at Chukchuki Watchtower.

Is Jaldapara National Park open every day?

No. Jaldapara National Park is closed on Thursdays for jeep safaris. When booking, itinerary dates are arranged to ensure your Jaldapara day does not fall on a Thursday. Additionally, the Dooars forests close from approximately mid-June to mid-September each year, so this package operates from October through mid-June only. Elephant safari slots are limited and allocated first-come-first-served at the forest counter.

Where is the pickup point for this package?

Pickup is from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP (New Jalpaiguri) Railway Station — whichever you arrive at. Both points are roughly 68 km from Lataguri, approximately a 2-hour drive. Drop-off at the end of the trip is at the same point. The entire journey from Day 1 to Day 4 is in a private air-conditioned vehicle, so there are no shared transfers or public transport connections to manage.

What is the group size and price for this trip?

A group of 2 travels at ₹20,000 per person, a group of 4 at ₹16,500 per person, and a group of 6 at ₹13,500 per person. The price covers 3 nights accommodation, all road transfers in a private vehicle, one Gorumara jeep safari session, and sightseeing at Samsing, Jhalong, and Bindu. Safari entry fees and the Jaldapara elephant safari charge are payable separately at forest counters.

Important to Know

  • ·Dooars forests are closed from approximately mid-June to mid-September (exact dates vary) — this package is not available during the monsoon closure period.
  • ·Elephant safari slots at Jaldapara are limited and allocated first-come-first-served at the forest counter — early arrival on Day 3 is strongly recommended.
  • ·Jeep safari permits for Gorumara can be booked online via wbsfda.org in advance — advance booking is advised October through March.
  • ·Jaldapara National Park is closed on Thursdays.
  • ·Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed — responsible safari guidelines apply at all times.
