Overview

This Bhutan group trip covers what most first-time visitors come for: Thimphu, Dochula Pass and its 108 stupas, Punakha Dzong, the hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery and the drive up to Chele La. It starts and ends at Bagdogra airport or NJP railway station, crosses into Bhutan by road at Phuentsholing, and spends a night in Phuentsholing at each end, so there's no 10-hour drive on the first or last day.

Mid-December is one of the clearest, quietest weeks of the year in Bhutan: cold mornings, blue skies and mountain views. You travel with up to 16 people and a licensed Bhutanese guide, with ClearEast on WhatsApp the whole way. Our team is based in Bengaluru.

  • Thimphu, the capital without traffic lights: the giant Buddha Dordenma above the valley, the Memorial Chorten and an afternoon at Simply Bhutan
  • Dochula Pass and its 108 stupas, with the Himalaya behind them on a clear December day
  • Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet, the long suspension bridge, and a walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang
  • The hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery, built into a cliff 900 metres above the Paro valley
  • Chele La, Bhutan's highest road pass, with views of Mount Jomolhari
  • A licensed Bhutanese guide with the group from the border to the border

Day by day

7 days · Bagdogra/NJP to Bagdogra/NJP

  1. Pick-up at Bagdogra airport or NJP railway station by 12:00 noon, then about four hours through the tea gardens of the Dooars to the border at Jaigaon. You walk through the gate into Phuentsholing, and the change is immediate: quieter streets, Bhutanese dress, prayer flags. Evening free in town, then dinner together at the hotel.

    Night in PhuentsholingDinner
  2. Your entry permit is arranged before you arrive, so we leave after breakfast. The road climbs for about five hours through forest and mountain villages, past Chuzom, where the Paro and Thimphu rivers meet beside three small stupas. Thimphu by evening: a walk around the capital, the only one in the world without traffic lights, then dinner.

    Night in ThimphuBreakfast, dinner
  3. A morning of Thimphu's best-known sights. Buddha Dordenma, the giant seated Buddha looking down over the valley. The National Memorial Chorten, where people from the city walk circles and turn the prayer wheels all day. Simply Bhutan, a living museum where you try archery and butter tea and watch a cultural show, and the Takin Preserve, home of Bhutan's odd-looking national animal. Then over Dochula Pass and its 108 stupas, and down into the warmer Punakha valley.

    Night in PunakhaBreakfast, dinner
  4. Punakha Dzong is the great white fortress where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet. Cross the long suspension bridge over the river, then walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, where couples come for a blessing. After lunch, about three and a half hours to Paro.

    Night in ParoBreakfast, dinner
  5. The day most people come to Bhutan for. Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, clings to a cliff 900 metres above the valley. The trail climbs through pine forest to a halfway café with the first full view of the monastery, then on to the top: 3 to 5 hours return, easy to moderate, at your own pace. Ponies are available for part of the way. In the evening, try a traditional hot stone bath if you like.

    Night in ParoBreakfast, dinner
  6. An early drive up to Chele La, about 3,900 metres and Bhutan's highest road pass, lined with prayer flags, with Mount Jomolhari and the Haa valley in view if the sky is clear and the road is open. Then the long, scenic drive down to Phuentsholing for the last evening and dinner together.

    Night in PhuentsholingBreakfast, dinner
  7. We leave Phuentsholing at 8:00 am after breakfast and drop you at Bagdogra airport or NJP railway station by 1:00 pm. Book flights or trains after 3:00 pm.

Questions about this trip

How much does a Bhutan trip cost for 2 people from India?

On this group trip, ₹31,450 per person, SDF included, so ₹62,900 for two, plus TCS. Add your travel to Bagdogra or NJP, lunches, entry fees and personal spending.

Do Indians need a visa or passport for Bhutan?

No visa. You need an entry permit, which we arrange, and either an Indian passport valid for 6 months or a Voter ID. Aadhaar and PAN aren't accepted.

What is the SDF, and is it included?

The Sustainable Development Fee is Bhutan's tourism fee: ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian adults. It's included in the price (₹7,200 for 6 nights).

What is TCS, and why is it charged?

Tax Collected at Source applies to overseas tour packages. It's collected against your PAN and you can adjust it against your income tax. We confirm the exact rate when you book.

How fit do I need to be for Tiger's Nest?

It's a steady uphill hike of 3–5 hours return. Most reasonably fit people manage it at their own pace; ponies go part of the way at extra cost.
