Overview

Meghalaya is one of the few places in India where Christmas is the biggest festival of the year. Shillong's streets and churches are lit up, carols fill the evenings, and Police Bazar is busy until late. On this trip you spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in the town itself, with no long drive on either day.

You travel with a small group of up to 10 and a trip captain who stays with you from Guwahati to Guwahati. Many travellers join on their own or as a couple, and the Christmas dinner, lunch and evening together make it easy to meet people.

  • Christmas Eve in Shillong: the lights of Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah, then a group Christmas Eve dinner
  • Christmas Day with no long drive: Ward's Lake, the churches of Laitumkhrah and a Christmas lunch together
  • A Christmas evening with cake, music and a small gift swap
  • A night by the crystal-clear Umngot river at Dawki: boat ride, snorkelling, kayaking and a bonfire
  • Mawlynnong, known as Asia's cleanest village, and the Riwai living root bridge
  • Sohra's Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and the Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint

  • December in Meghalaya is dry and cold, close to freezing at night in Shillong and Sohra. Pack proper winter wear.
  • The riverside camp is simple: tents by the river, cold at night. The river water is cold in December, so the activities are your choice.
  • On Christmas Day many shops and eateries close or open late. We book your Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas lunch in advance; carry a few snacks.
  • Churches are places of worship. Attend quietly, dress modestly and ask before taking photographs.
  • Celebrate responsibly: alcohol is at your own cost and responsibility and is not allowed in the vehicle. Please be on time for the group each morning.
  • Christmas week is busy: expect traffic on the hill roads, which can add 1 to 2 hours to a drive, and crowds in Shillong.
  • We stay in clean, comfortable hotels and homestays, and a riverside camp. We share the property names once rooms are confirmed.
  • Roads, weather or safety may change the order of sightseeing on a day.
What to pack
  • Winter jacket, thermals, woollen cap and gloves, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear and a change of clothes for the river, a small gift (under ₹300) for the gift swap, water bottle, sunscreen, power bank, personal medicines.

Questions about this trip

What is Christmas like in Shillong?

Meghalaya is largely Christian, so Christmas is the main festival of the year. Streets, churches and public buildings are lit up, there are carol services and church services, and Police Bazar and Ward's Lake are very busy in the evenings.

Is Meghalaya worth visiting in December?

Yes. December is dry, so roads and viewpoints are easier than in the monsoon, the Umngot river at Dawki is at its clearest, and Shillong celebrates Christmas in a big way. Nights are cold, close to freezing.

What do we do on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

On Christmas Eve we walk through the lights of Police Bazar and Laitumkhrah and have a group dinner. Christmas Day has no long drive: an optional morning church service, Ward's Lake and the churches of Laitumkhrah, a Christmas lunch together, and an evening of cake, music and a small gift swap.

Will shops and restaurants be open on Christmas Day?

Many close or open late. That's why we book your Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas lunch in advance. Carry a few snacks for the rest of the day.

How cold is it?

December days are dry and sunny, but nights are close to freezing in Shillong and Sohra, and colder in the tents at the river camp. Pack thermals, a heavy jacket, a woollen cap and gloves.

Where does the trip start and end?

At Paltan Bazaar, next to Guwahati railway station, at 9:30 am on 22 December. We drop you at Paltan Bazaar, the airport or the station by about 1:30 pm on 27 December. Book flights after 7:00 pm and trains after 7:30 pm.
