Overview
Two of the Northeast's big December sights in one easy week. You start in Guwahati with a morning jeep safari in Kaziranga, home of the one-horned rhino, then cross into Nagaland and stay three nights in Kigwema, the village next door to Kisama, where the Hornbill Festival runs from 1 to 10 December.
You're at the festival on its opening day and again for an evening, with a morning in between at Khonoma village and the Kohima War Cemetery. A local trip captain is with you the whole way, and we've worked out the awkward part, getting home from Dimapur, before you book.
- A morning jeep safari in Kaziranga's tall grass and wetlands, looking for the one-horned rhino
- The Hornbill Festival's opening day at Kisama: each Naga tribe's morung, warriors in full dress, dances and songs
- A second evening at the festival for the performances and music
- Khonoma, the Angami village known as Asia's first green village, with its terraced fields
- Kohima War Cemetery, the memorial to the 1944 Battle of Kohima
- Three nights in a family homestay in Kigwema, the village next door to the festival

Day by day
6 days · Guwahati to Dimapur
We meet at Paltan Bazaar at 9:15 and head east on NH-37, past Nagaon and into Assam's tea country, with a stop for lunch on the way. It's about four hours to Kaziranga, where the road runs alongside the tea gardens at the park's edge. You arrive by mid-afternoon with nothing else planned: rest, eat early and pack your bag, because tomorrow starts in the dark.
Night in KazirangaDinnerThe one early morning of the trip. We leave at 6:45 for the Central Range gate at Kohora, and at 7:30 the jeeps go in for about two hours through tall elephant grass, open grassland and shallow wetland, the home of the one-horned rhino. December mornings here are cool and often misty. Kaziranga holds most of the world's one-horned rhinos, so while nobody can promise a sighting, this is the place to try. Back for breakfast around ten, then about four hours on to Dimapur, the gateway to Nagaland.
Night in DimapurBreakfast, dinnerA slower start. We leave Dimapur at nine and climb for about three hours into the hills to Kigwema, an Angami Naga village right next to Kisama, where the festival is held. You check in at a family-run homestay around noon and have the afternoon to walk the village lanes, the day before the festival opens and the crowds arrive.
Night in KigwemaBreakfast, dinnerThe day the trip is built around. Kisama Heritage Village is laid out as a Naga village, with a morung, the traditional house, for each tribe. Through the day the arena fills with warriors in red and black, feathered headgear and spears, dancers, singers and drummers, with indigenous games in between, and the morungs serve food and sell crafts. Programmes usually run in a morning and an afternoon session. Stay on for the evening music if you like (tickets extra if the organisers charge), then it's a short ride home to Kigwema for dinner.
Night in KigwemaBreakfast, dinnerA morning away from the festival crowds. Khonoma is about an hour's drive, an Angami village of stone paths, old houses and terraced rice fields, known as Asia's first green village for the way it protects its forest. On the way back we stop at the Kohima War Cemetery, the memorial to the 1944 Battle of Kohima, laid out on the hillside in the middle of town. Late in the afternoon we return to Kisama for a second evening of performances and music.
Night in KigwemaBreakfast, dinnerAfter breakfast we leave Kigwema at eight and drive about three hours down to Dimapur. The trip ends at the railway station or the airport around 11:30, so book a flight after 1:30 pm or a train after 12:30 pm. Going home to the south or west? The "Getting there" plan below, through Guwahati, is the easy way.

Good to know
The trip starts at Paltan Bazaar, Guwahati, at 9:30 am on 28 November and ends in Dimapur on 3 December. Arrive in Guwahati the evening before.
From Kolkata
About 1 h 15 min by flight to Guwahati, or the overnight Howrah to Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper (about 14 hours). Going home, fly Dimapur to Kolkata or go through Guwahati.
From Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai or Delhi
Fly to Guwahati (Delhi about 2 h 25 min, Mumbai about 3 h 10 min). Going home, take a flight or train from Dimapur to Guwahati on day 6, stay a night near Paltan Bazaar and fly home the next morning.
Going home from Dimapur
Daily flights to Guwahati (about 1 h 10 min) and to Kolkata; day trains to Guwahati around 1:05 pm and 4:10 pm (about 5 to 6 hours). Don't book a tight same-day connection.
Coming a day early?
Ask us for a hotel near Paltan Bazaar for the night of 27 November.
Documents
- An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is needed for Nagaland. Send us a clear scan of your government photo ID and a passport-size photo by Wednesday 18 November 2026 and we help you apply.
- Carry the same ID and a copy of your ILP on your phone: it may be checked on the road.
- The Kaziranga safari is booked online in advance with your ID details, so send us a copy of your ID when you join.
Things to know
- Wildlife sightings in Kaziranga can never be guaranteed. The park sets the safari slot and zone; if the Central Range is not open for your date, we use the Western Range (Bagori) at the same time.
- In the park: wear muted colours (khaki or olive), keep quiet and stay in the jeep.
- Day 2 starts early (wake-up 5:45 am) and is followed by a 4-hour drive.
- December is cold: Kaziranga mornings are cool and foggy, and Kigwema nights are cold.
- The homestay is simple and family-run; some washrooms may be shared. We share the property names when you book.
- Hornbill week is busy. The festival programme is run by the organisers and can change.
- Carry cash (we suggest ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 a person): networks and UPI often fail in the hills.
- Roads, weather or safety may change the order of a day.
What to pack
- Thermals, heavy jacket, woollen cap, gloves and thick socks, comfortable walking shoes, muted colours for the safari, rain jacket, binoculars if you have them, torch, power bank, water bottle, personal medicines. A soft bag is easier than a hard suitcase.
Booking terms
- Book your seat with ₹10,000 per person. The balance is due by Wednesday 18 November 2026.
- Bookings close on Wednesday 18 November 2026, so there is time for the Inner Line Permit.
- One small-group departure of up to 10 travellers.

Questions about this trip
How much does the trip cost?
₹29,999 per person, double sharing. Festival entry, the Inner Line Permit fee and lunches are extra.
When does the trip run?
One small-group departure: Saturday 28 November to Thursday 3 December 2026, with the festival's opening day (Tuesday 1 December) on day 4. Need another date? Ask us about a private departure.
Why should I arrive in Guwahati the evening before?
We leave Paltan Bazaar at 9:30 am, so arriving the night before lets you rest and means a late flight or train can't delay the group. If you land on the morning of day 1 and can be at the meeting point by 9:15 am, you can still join.
What is the Kaziranga safari?
One jeep safari of about 2 hours in the Central Range, first slot at 7:30 am. Each jeep takes up to 6 guests, and we book it in advance. Sightings can't be guaranteed.
Are the festival tickets included?
No. You pay at the gate; the organisers set the amount.
Do I need a permit for Nagaland?
Yes, an Inner Line Permit. Send us your ID and photo by Wednesday 18 November and we help you apply. You pay the permit fee online.
How do I get home from Dimapur?
Fly Dimapur to Guwahati (daily) or Kolkata, or take a train to Guwahati. From the south and west it's safest to go home through Guwahati, with a night there.
Can I stay on for more of the festival?
Yes. We can add extra nights in Kigwema and move your drop to the day you choose, on request and at extra cost.
What about food?
Breakfast and dinner are included; lunches are yours. Tell us if you're vegetarian: pure vegetarian meals can be limited in the hills.
