Overview

Late December is the season for Darjeeling and Sikkim: cold, clear mornings, Kanchenjunga on the skyline, and a chance of snow at Tsomgo Lake. This trip takes you through three bases in a week: two nights in Darjeeling, one in Pelling, and three in Gangtok, where you see the New Year in.

You travel with a small group of up to 10 and a trip captain who stays with you from Bagdogra to Bagdogra. Many travellers join on their own or as a couple, and the New Year's Eve group dinner makes it easy to start the year with people you've met on the road.

  • Tiger Hill at sunrise, with Kanchenjunga catching the first light on a clear morning
  • Darjeeling's toy-train town: the Batasia Loop, Ghoom monastery and the Peace Pagoda
  • Pemayangtse monastery and the Rabdentse ruins in Pelling, with Kanchenjunga in view on a clear day
  • Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir in the high country (snow depends on the weather)
  • New Year's Eve in Gangtok: a group dinner, then MG Marg to welcome the New Year
  • Two private SUVs, a trip captain and a group of up to 10

Good to know

The trip starts at Bagdogra airport (IXB) at 9:30 am on 27 December. Guests coming by train are picked up from NJP railway station at 9:00 am. Arrive in Siliguri the evening before and rest, so a late flight or train can't delay the group.

  • By air

Direct flights reach Bagdogra from Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai. Check the airline for 26 and 27 December. Flights landing after 11:00 am can't join the 9:30 am pick-up, so please arrive on the 26th.

  • By train

Trains reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) from across India. Check IRCTC for 26 and 27 December.

  • Going home

We end at Bagdogra airport and NJP station by about 1:00 pm on 2 January: book flights after 4:00 pm and trains after 4:30 pm. From far cities it can be easier to go home through Kolkata or Delhi than to find a direct flight the same evening.

  • Need a hotel the night before?

Ask us to suggest a hotel near the airport or station in Siliguri for the night of 26 December.

Documents
  • Carry a government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, passport or driving licence) and a few passport photos. We arrange the Tsomgo permits.
Things to know
  • Weather: late December is cold. Darjeeling and Gangtok nights are about 0–5°C, and Tsomgo and Nathula are well below zero. Pack proper winter wear.
  • Snow: Tsomgo often gets snow in January, but we can't promise it on a given day. Tsomgo and Nathula can close at short notice for snow or security reasons; we then move the day or choose another sight.
  • Altitude: Tsomgo is about 12,400 ft and Nathula about 14,140 ft. Guests with heart, blood pressure or breathing problems should tell us when booking.
  • Nathula is open to Indian citizens only, usually Wednesday to Sunday, and the permit is confirmed a day ahead.
  • New Year's week is busy: expect crowds on MG Marg and the Mall, slow hill roads (traffic can add 1 to 2 hours to a drive) and early-morning fog at Bagdogra.
  • Celebrate responsibly: alcohol is at your own cost and responsibility and is not allowed in the vehicle. Please be on time for the group each morning.
  • We stay in clean, comfortable hotels and homestays. We share the property names once rooms are confirmed.
  • Roads, weather or safety may change the order of sightseeing on a day.
What to pack
  • Winter jacket, thermals, woollen cap, gloves and scarf, comfortable walking shoes, a torch, water bottle, sunscreen, power bank, personal medicines.
Booking terms
  • Book your seat with ₹10,000 per person.
  • Balance due by Monday 14 December 2026.
  • Bookings close on Monday 21 December 2026, or earlier when all 10 seats are filled. Bookings after 14 December pay in full.
  • Your seat is reserved once we receive the booking amount. We confirm hotels and transport in writing before departure.
  • The departure runs with a minimum of 9 travellers. If it does not, you get a full refund or a seat on another departure.

Questions about this trip

Will we see snow?

Tsomgo Lake often has snow in January, but we can't promise it on a given day. If Tsomgo or Nathula is closed on 31 December, the sightseeing day on 1 January is used for them.

What is New Year's Eve like in Gangtok?

MG Marg, the pedestrian street, is crowded and lively. We have a group dinner at the hotel, then walk to MG Marg to welcome the New Year together.

Do I need a permit for Tsomgo and Nathula?

We arrange the Tsomgo permits and the permit vehicles. Nathula Pass is open to Indian citizens only, usually Wednesday to Sunday, and the permit is confirmed a day ahead, so it's an optional extra subject to the permit.

How cold is it?

Nights in Darjeeling and Gangtok are about 0 to 5°C, and Tsomgo and Nathula are well below zero. Pack thermals, a heavy jacket, a woollen cap, gloves and a scarf.

Is altitude a problem?

Tsomgo is about 12,400 ft and Nathula about 14,140 ft. Guests with heart, blood pressure or breathing problems should tell us when booking.

Where does the trip start and end?

At Bagdogra airport at 9:30 am on 27 December (NJP railway station at 9:00 am), and back at Bagdogra airport and NJP station by about 1:00 pm on 2 January. Book flights after 4:00 pm and trains after 4:30 pm.
