Indians do not need a visa for Bhutan. You need an entry permit and either a valid Indian passport or an original Voter ID card. You also pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1,200 for each night you stay, and Bhutan requires a licensed guide once you go beyond the border towns. This guide follows the Indian Embassy in Thimphu, whose page was updated on 1 November 2026, and Bhutan's official tourism site.

Which documents do I need?

Carry a passport valid for at least six months, or your original Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India. Bhutan's tourism site and the Embassy both list only these two. Aadhaar is on neither list, so do not rely on it. Bring recent passport-size photos. Children travelling without a passport need their original birth certificate, and Bhutan's site says under-18s must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Where is the entry permit issued?

By road, you get it from a regional immigration office at Phuentsholing, Gelephu, Samdrup Jongkhar or Samtse. By air, you get it at Paro International Airport. Bhutan's tourism site says you can apply online before you travel or at the point of entry, though waits at the border can be long. The Department of Immigration (immi.gov.bt) has the application. Operators usually arrange the permit for you. Operators and guides describe the permit itself as free, and the Embassy page does not mention a fee.

What is the SDF and how much is it?

The Sustainable Development Fee is Bhutan's daily tourist fee. Indian adults pay ₹1,200 per night, children from 6 to under 12 pay ₹600, and children under 6 pay nothing (bhutan.travel FAQ, read 1 November 2026). Most packages include it. Check that yours does.

From 2 June 2026, for one year to about August 2027, Indians who stay inside a border town for up to 24 hours pay no SDF. The waiver applies only if you stay inside the zone (in Phuentsholing, that means before Rinchending Checkpost) and go no further. If you continue to Thimphu, SDF applies to your nights.

Do I need a guide?

Yes, once you go beyond the border towns. Bhutan's tourism site says it is mandatory to be accompanied by a guide at all times in Bhutan, and that guides are also required for entering monuments and dzongs and for visitors travelling by land beyond the border towns. In practice this means you cannot tour Bhutan on your own. Operators supply a licensed guide with the vehicle.

Can I carry cash in rupees?

Yes, within limits. The Embassy page says Indian citizens may carry Indian currency in notes up to ₹500, for a total of up to ₹25,000. Larger amounts have to be in notes of ₹100 or lower. Card machines are scarce outside the main towns, so most travellers carry cash.

Where sources still conflict

Several operator pages say the ₹1,200 rate is fixed until 31 August 2027. The Embassy page gives the rate and no end date, so we cannot confirm that date for Indians.

Sources also differ on the child age limits. Bhutan's tourism site gives free under 6 and half rate from 6 to under 12, while another source says under 5 free and ₹600 from 5 to 12. We follow the tourism site.

Some operators say the guide rule started with an April 2026 notification, and others say it has always applied. We could not find that notification, so we state only what the tourism site says today. Check the current position with your operator before you book, because all of these can change.

Who is this for?

Anyone planning a first trip to Bhutan from India. If you are travelling with children, check the documents rule before you buy tickets, because a missing birth certificate stops the family at the border.
