From Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad, a 6-night Bhutan trip costs roughly ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 a person by the usual route: fly to Bagdogra in West Bengal, then go by road into Bhutan on a group package. The package runs about ₹31,000 to ₹45,000. Your return flight to Bagdogra adds about ₹12,000 to ₹25,000, and entry fees, lunches and small extras add about ₹6,000 to ₹9,000. Going by train removes the flight but adds about four days of travel.

Prices, schedules and fees change. The ranges marked as our estimate are ours, built from the sources listed at the end. Last checked 1 November 2026.

How do I get to Bhutan from Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad?

Bhutan's only international airport is Paro, and none of these three cities has a flight to it. That leaves three routes: fly to Bagdogra and go by road, take the train to Bengal and go by road, or fly to Kolkata or Delhi and then to Paro.

Route 1: fly to Bagdogra (IXB), then road to Phuentsholing

BengaluruIndiGo nonstop, about 2 h 40 min to 3 h. Lowest one-way fares seen about ₹5,000 to ₹8,100
ChennaiNonstop, about 2 h 25 min to 2 h 55 min. Lowest fares seen about ₹6,300 to ₹7,000
HyderabadAbout 2 h 15 min to 2 h 20 min. Lowest fares seen about ₹6,200 to ₹8,700. One site lists no nonstop, so check when you book

Fares are the lowest listed in snapshots from June to November 2026 on HappyFares, Skyscanner, Paytm and similar sites, and several of them say December is one of the dearest months on these routes. Flight times and fares come from aggregator sites, not airline timetables.

Bagdogra airport is about 160 to 165 km from the border town of Phuentsholing, which is four to five and a half hours by road. You go to Jaigaon on the Indian side, take an auto to the Bhutan Gate and cross on foot into Phuentsholing, where the entry permit is issued. From Phuentsholing, Thimphu is about five to six hours. If you land after early afternoon, a night in Siliguri or Jaigaon is easier than driving in the dark: the road crosses Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and is best driven by day. Most group packages start and end at Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station.

Route 2: train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), Alipurduar or Hasimara, then road

BengaluruAbout 41 to 44 hours to NJP. The Bengaluru to Alipurduar Amrit Bharat Express (16597), launched on 17 January 2026, runs once a week: Saturday 8:50 am to Monday 10:25 am. One timetable shows a stop at Hasimara at about 8:30 am on Monday (check on IRCTC)
ChennaiAbout 35 to 40 hours to NJP. The Aronai Express (12507) takes about 35.5 hours
HyderabadNo direct train to NJP found. Check IRCTC for one-change options

Three stations matter. New Jalpaiguri, near Siliguri, is the main railhead for the south, about 155 km from Jaigaon. Hasimara is the nearest to Phuentsholing, about 18 km, with autos to Jaigaon in 20 to 30 minutes, though few trains stop there. Alipurduar is about 50 to 55 km from Jaigaon, with direct buses and taxis. The train saves the flight fare but costs about a day and a half each way, so a six-night trip needs three to four extra days. Train fares were not available to us: check IRCTC.

Route 3 is to fly to Kolkata or Delhi and then to Paro on Bhutan Airlines or Drukair. It avoids the long road legs but costs the most. Kolkata to Paro was listed at about ₹21,000 to ₹31,000 one way and Delhi to Paro at about ₹28,000 to ₹38,000, on top of your flight to Kolkata or Delhi. For most South Indian travellers, Route 1 is cheaper.

What does a group package cost, and what is in it?

Group packages by road from Bagdogra, 6 nights, twin sharing, were listed at about ₹30,900 to ₹45,000 per person on seller pages read on 29 October 2026, with 5% GST added on top by most sellers. Prices step up in Christmas week. Our own group departure on 12 to 18 December 2026 is ₹31,450 plus 5% GST (₹33,023 in all), with pick-up and drop at Bagdogra or NJP.

A package usually includes hotels certified by Bhutan's Department of Tourism, breakfast and dinner, the SDF, permits, a licensed guide and a shared Coaster bus with a driver. It usually leaves out lunches, monument entry fees, flights, insurance and TCS, a government tax collected against your PAN and adjustable against your income tax. When you compare two quotes, check four things: whether the SDF is included, whether all dinners are included, whether the drop at Bagdogra is included (some trips end in Siliguri), and whether the hotels are named.

Private trips cost more per person for fewer people because the vehicle and guide are shared. One operator's 7-night deluxe private package, with guide and entry fees excluded, is ₹61,500 for two people, ₹49,500 for four and ₹43,500 for six.

What does a trip cost piece by piece?

If you build the trip yourself through an operator, these are the pieces. Bhutan requires a licensed guide for Indian visitors beyond the border towns, so a guide is part of every trip.

Cost pieces (operator rate card, 27 October 2026, unless stated)

Hotel, 3-star double room, off-peak (December to February, June to August)Thimphu ₹3,500 to ₹5,500, Paro ₹3,500 to ₹5,500, Punakha ₹3,500 to ₹5,000, Phuentsholing ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per room per night

Vehicle with driver and fuel, per day7 to 8 seats ₹5,000 to ₹7,500. 8 to 10 seats ₹7,500 to ₹9,000. 18 to 19 seats ₹7,500 to ₹12,000

What are the entry fees at each sight?

Almost every package leaves entry fees out. The fees below are the 2026 list published by Windhorse Tours, in ngultrum (Nu 1 equals ₹1). Children aged 6 to 18 usually pay half and under-5s go free.

Entry fees in Nu (Windhorse Tours 2026 list)

National Memorial Chorten, ThimphuNu 500
Tashichho Dzong, ThimphuNu 500

Punakha rafting (optional)About ₹2,000 a person (Tripper Trails); another list shows ₹10,000 per boat
Hot stone bath (optional)About ₹1,500 (Tripper Trails)

For the usual eight-sight route (Buddha Dordenma, Simply Bhutan, Changyul Park, Punakha Dzong, the nunnery, the National Museum, Kyichu Lhakhang and Tiger's Nest) the fees come to about ₹4,100. Adding the Memorial Chorten, Chimi Lhakhang and the Takin Preserve takes it to about ₹5,400. Budget about ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 a person.

These fees are listed for tourists, and the list does not say whether Indian visitors pay the same. A July 2022 notice reported fees double these (Nu 1,000 for most dzongs and Nu 2,000 for Tiger's Nest) for all tourists, and other seller lists differ on a few sights. We could not find an official 2026 schedule, so ask your guide or operator for the current fee at each sight.

What are the cheapest ways to do Bhutan from South India?

Join a group departure, since the hotel, bus and guide are shared. Travel from December to February or June to August, when hotel rates are lower, though flights to Bagdogra are often dearer in December. Fly to Bagdogra, which needs one flight, instead of Paro, which needs two. Take the train if you have the days. Book flights on the cheaper days: HappyFares data suggests Wednesday for Chennai and Monday for Hyderabad. Book early, and skip optional extras you will not use.

Which places does a 6-night trip cover?

The standard route is Phuentsholing, Thimphu, Punakha, Paro and back to Phuentsholing. In Thimphu you see Buddha Dordenma, the Memorial Chorten and the Takin Preserve. On the way to Punakha you cross Dochula Pass and its 108 stupas. Punakha has the Dzong, the suspension bridge and Chimi Lhakhang. Paro has the National Museum, Kyichu Lhakhang and the hike to Tiger's Nest, a 3 to 5 hour round trip. Many routes add Chele La, Bhutan's highest motorable pass at about 3,900 metres. In December, Dochula and Chele La can get snow, so guides sometimes swap the order of the days.

Who is the trip for?

It suits first-time visitors from South India who want a road trip with a licensed guide and a clear price. It is a poor fit for travellers who dislike four to six hour road days, who want hotels above 3-star, or who want to travel without a guide, which Bhutan does not allow beyond the border towns.
